Ceramic coating vs PPF: which one do you actually need?
They solve different problems, and the marketing for both muddies it. Here's the honest comparison.
The short version: a coating is chemical protection, film is physical protection. They are not competitors, and plenty of cars end up with both.
What a ceramic coating does well
- Chemical resistance against bird lime, tree sap and industrial fallout
- Strong hydrophobic behaviour — water sheets off instead of drying into spots
- Genuinely easier washing, which indirectly prevents swirls
- Years of gloss retention rather than months
What it does not do
It will not stop a stone chip. It will not stop a shopping trolley. Hardness ratings quoted as "9H" refer to a pencil hardness scale that has very little to do with road debris.
What PPF does well
Urethane film is thick and absorbs impact. A stone that would chip your bonnet hits film instead. Modern film self-heals light marring with heat, so swirls in the film itself disappear in the sun or with warm water.

How we'd actually spend the money
If the car does significant motorway miles, put film on the front end first — that's where the chips land. Then coat everything, film included. If it's a weekend car that lives in a garage, a coating alone is usually the better value.
Anyone who tells you a coating removes the need for film is selling coatings.
